A first print does not need dozens of modified settings. The safest route is to remove obvious variables, use the printer manufacturer's tested profile and watch the first layer closely.
The Fast Answer
For a first attempt, use ordinary PLA, the correct build plate profile and a small model that is already known to print well. Clean the plate, run the printer's calibration routine, slice with a standard profile and stay with the machine while the first layers are laid down.
Before You Start
Work through these checks before heating the printer:
- Remove every shipping clip, foam block, cable tie and transport screw identified by the manufacturer.
- Put the printer on a firm, level surface with clear space around every moving part.
- Check that the build plate is fitted in the correct orientation and sits flat.
- Confirm the nozzle and plate selected in the slicer match the hardware on the printer.
- Run the machine's initial calibration, bed-levelling or vibration routine if it provides one.
- Keep hands, loose clothing and tools away from the hotend and moving axes.
Do not copy a stranger's calibration numbers. Nozzle offset and first-layer values can be specific to the individual printer, nozzle and build surface.
Choose A Forgiving Filament
Standard PLA is the easiest starting point for most enclosed and open-frame FDM printers. It normally prints at relatively modest temperatures, has low warping and is well supported by default slicer profiles.
Avoid silk, filled, flexible or very cheap unknown filament for the first test. These materials can introduce extra variables such as moisture, abrasion, inconsistent diameter or different flow behaviour.
Load the spool so it can unwind freely. Cut a clean end, follow the printer's loading process and confirm a steady strand exits the nozzle. If the filament crackles, bubbles or produces a rough surface, it may have absorbed moisture.
Prepare The Build Plate
A fingerprint can be enough to spoil adhesion. Handle the plate by its edges and follow its manufacturer's cleaning instructions. For many removable PEI plates, a wash with warm water and plain dish soap removes grease effectively; rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean lint-free cloth.
Alcohol is useful on many surfaces, but it does not replace an occasional proper wash and it is not suitable for every specialist plate. Never use acetone or another aggressive solvent unless the plate manufacturer specifically permits it.
Slice With A Standard Profile
Start with:
- The exact printer model and nozzle diameter.
- The correct build plate type.
- A generic or manufacturer PLA profile.
- A normal quality preset, commonly around a 0.20 mm layer height with a 0.4 mm nozzle.
- Automatic supports only if the model genuinely needs them.
Do not change speed, flow, retraction and temperature together. A known profile gives you a useful baseline; random changes make any failure harder to diagnose.
For the model, choose a small calibration object supplied by the manufacturer or a simple design with a broad flat base. A complex articulated model is a poor first test because it mixes printer setup with model-specific difficulty.
Watch The First Layer
The first layer is the foundation of the entire print. Look for lines that are slightly flattened and joined together without being scraped transparent.
If the lines remain round, leave gaps or move with the nozzle, the nozzle may be too far from the plate or the surface may be contaminated. If the nozzle drags, barely extrudes or creates sharp ridges, it may be too close.
Do not solve weak adhesion by endlessly forcing the nozzle lower. Prusa's guidance warns that an excessively low first layer can obstruct extrusion and damage the build surface. Stop the print if the first layer is clearly failing, correct one cause and try again.
Let The Print Finish Safely
Remain nearby during a new printer's first jobs and check it periodically. Stop immediately if filament starts collecting around the nozzle, the model detaches or a cable catches.
When the print finishes, allow the plate and part to cool. Many parts release naturally as the plate contracts. Forcing a hot part off can damage both the print and the surface.
Your First-Print Checklist
- Correct printer, nozzle, filament and plate profiles selected.
- Build surface clean and correctly installed.
- Calibration completed without an error.
- Filament extruding smoothly.
- First-layer lines joined and slightly flattened.
- No dragging, lifting corners or loose filament.
- Print allowed to cool before removal.
Once this simple print works, save the profile as your baseline. Change only one setting at a time when you begin experimenting.
